Staying Plant-Based Whilst Travelling

Traveling is a great opportunity to explore new cultures, try new foods and create unforgettable memories. Throughout my years of being a Chef, I have been able to visit some of the most amazing places in the world. However when not travelling for work, it can be a challenge to maintain a plant-based diet while on the road. However, it's completely possible to stay plant-based while traveling so I have put together some things that have helped me over the years for you to use on your next trip away so you can stay plant-based and enjoy all the amazing experiences that traveling has to offer!

Do Your Research

Before you hit the road, research the local food scene and find out which restaurants offer plant-based options. You can also check out online forums and social media groups to get recommendations from other plant-based travellers. Knowing where to find vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants ahead of time can save you a lot of time and stress. By finding places you want to eat, these helps plan your meals ahead of time. If you know you'll be eating out, take a look at the menu online and choose a dish that can be easily modified to be plant-based.

Pack Snacks

It's always a good idea to bring some snacks with you when traveling. Pack some fresh fruit, nuts, energy bars or other plant-based snacks that will keep you full and energised throughout the day. This way, you won't be tempted to grab unhealthy options when hunger strikes.

Cook Your Own Meals

If you're lucky enough to be staying in an Airbnb or a place with a kitchenette, take advantage of it and cook your own meals. You can visit a local market or grocery store and stock up on fresh produce, grains and other plant-based ingredients. Cooking your own meals is not only healthier but also a great way to connect with the local food culture.

Be Flexible

While it's important to stick to your dietary choices, it's also important to be flexible and open-minded. Sometimes, you may not be able to find a plant-based option or you may be served a dish that contains animal products. In these situations, try to find a compromise. You can ask the server to remove the animal product or simply eat around it. Remember, traveling is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. Don't stress too much, if you slip up and eat something non-plant-based, don't beat yourself up over it. Just get back on track the next meal.

Learn the Lingo

If you're traveling to a foreign country where you don't speak the language, it's a good idea to learn some basic food-related phrases. For example, learn how to say "vegetarian" or "no meat" in the local language. This will make it easier for you to communicate your dietary needs to servers and chefs. Many traditional dishes from around the world are naturally plant-based or can be easily modified to be plant-based.
